COH Pushes Climate Action While Dumping Recycling into a Landfill

In the land of do as I say, not as I do, the City of Houston is at it again with the recently released draft of its Climate Action Plan. Just a week before Mayor Turner is set to make the announcement about the Plan and open it up to public comment, KHOU investigative reporter Jeremy Rogalski released an embarrassing report on the city's recycling activities.

Apparently, at the same time the City is launching its thirty-year plan to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2050, they are taking our carefully sorted recyclables to landfills. And it's been going on for some time. According to the KHOU report, 2.6 million pounds of recycling has been dumped into landfills over the past six months.

The Climate Action Plan was launched by Mayor Turner (and other C40 mayors) in response to President Trump pulling out of the Paris Climate Agreement. The 30-year plan was put together with stakeholder input over a roughly three-month period earlier this year. Houston BOMA has been honored to be a stakeholder and to provide input into the Plan for the betterment of Houston and Houstonians. That said, the City must lead by example and set the standard in being an outstanding environmental steward.

It's hard to convince others to get on board when you're not walking the walk yourself.  #tb
